From the minute you step out into Barbara McQuillin’s backyard from her glass enclosed sun-porch, you are transported into a magical place with sights, sounds, and smells that will soothe your mind and soul. Barbara and her husband built their current home in 1992 in the Moss Creek subdivision in Cayce. Essentially, the yard was a blank slate when construction on the home was completed. Barbara spent the next 17 years creating her masterpiece garden that exists today. Barbara, a Lexington County Master Gardener Volunteer, has created something very special through what obviously must have been a labor of love.

The garden, with its many diverse plantings, winding paths, and outdoor rooms, tempts you to explore what lies beyond the next turn. The garden has the added advantage of backing up to a wooded nature preserve that lies between the Moss Creek and Edenwood subdivisions. As I stood in a small, sun-dappled spot near a pathway arbor covered in vines, I could only imagine the infinite number of shades and colors that would be displayed as the light changed throughout the day and the seasons.

In addition to being able to enjoy the garden in the natural light, a visitor can delight there after dark. Barbara has also created a night time garden with path lights and landscaping up lights that accentuate many of the trees and plantings.

The master gardener program is part of the Clemson Cooperative Extension program, and is one of the primary ways of providing the state’s urban residents with horticultural information. The program is currently active in 45 states and four Canadian provinces. South Carolina first adopted the Master Gardener program in 1981 in Charleston County. The Moss Creek subdivision is conveniently located in the city of Cayce just minutes from the entrance to two major highways I-26 and I-77. It is also very convenient to downtown, the river walk, and the vista with its wide array of dining choices.

Cayce is a city on the move. The new mayor Elise Partin has been instrumental in unifying the residents, and providing the people with a voice in deciding the future look and feel for their city.
